Hawaii Travel Guide

Your laid-back guide to Waikiki

With a childhood spent vacationing near the shores of St. Augustine, I developed a longing for beaches and warm waters.  This destination was only 45 minutes from home, and I’d never been on a plane for vacation or anything else!  I have wonderful memories of these Florida beaches but always wished to visit a more tropical location. Hawaii became my dream destination as a young person, offering glorious blue waters, year-round warm weather, fruity cocktails, and swaying palms. Falling in love with a man with Hawaiian roots has deepened my connection to the islands. Now, having visited Hawaii 20 times and counting, I'm making up for lost time in the travel department. We visit Oahu's Waikiki every summer to visit family, relax and embrace the island's beauty.

Returning to the same place each year brings a comforting familiarity, allowing us to fully unwind, knowing we'll be back again. Our Hawaii days revolve around surfing, indulging in delicious food, lounging by the pool and beaches, and enjoying Hawaiian music. Now, as we travel with an aging parent and our daughter, our pace has slowed even more. This low-key guide to Oahu is filled with my favorite food spots and laid-back activities in Waikiki.

To Stay

Alohilani

One of my favorite places to stay in Waikiki. A modern and luxurious hotel in the heart of Waikiki. Its contemporary design, open layout, and natural light create a welcoming atmosphere. The mesmerizing saltwater aquarium adds to the tranquil ambiance. Don't miss the opportunity to rent a pool cabana and enjoy lunch, drinks, and the Hawaiian breeze (Our favorite past time while there!). With a walled-off beach right across the street, it's a great option for families with small kids. https://www.alohilaniresort.com/hotel/

To Do

Experience Hawaiian Culture

Participate in hula instruction, lei-making, and ukulele lessons at the Royal Hawaiian Center. Enjoy authentic cultural performances in their shaded courtyard. Many of the lessons are taught by native Hawaiians and most activities are free.  https://www.royalhawaiiancenter.com/events

Discover quieter beaches

Waikiki can get packed which adds to its liveliness.  However, if you are craving quite beach time escape the crowds and relax in the lesser-populated areas in front of Kapiolani Park or beyond the Natatorium.

Hike and Walk

Hike Diamond Head Crater and explore the Honolulu Zoo.

To Eat

Island Vintage Wine Bar

Try any of their Poke dishes. Their tuna is always super fresh.  Octopus Salad, Steamed Clams.  I’ve yet to find anything on the menu that I didn’t love.  Also be sure to try their sister restaurant Island Vintage Coffee. Try their Lox plate, Island Plate, or Hawaiian Honey Latte for a fresh and made-to-order experience.  There is almost always a wait (so go before you are too hungry).  It is completely worth the long line!! Pro-tip- The Acai bowls and coffee are usually available to order online.

Sansei

Don't miss this excellent sushi and Japanese restaurant. Make a reservation for the patio during sunset for a light dinner and a captivating view. This is our favorite first stop after a long flight to the island. https://dkrestaurants.com/sansei-waikiki/

Deck

Indulge while enjoying views of Diamond Head. For breakfast or brunch at Deck try the Tokyo pancakes. They are to die for and unlike anything I’ve had.  Try the unique dinner options, like Kauai Shrimp and Lilikoi Ribs. Make this place a must-visit!

To See

Watch local bodyboarders

Of course Waikiki is one of the best places to watch surfers catch the waves but have you ever seen bodyboards avoid a near collision with a wall at a birds-eye view? Head to the The Wall and on the way pick up a coffee from Kai coffee. Take the walkway that juts out at the corner of Kalakaua Avenue and Kapahulu Ave all the way to the end.   Grab a seat along the wall and enjoy the “spongers” catch the waves and bail out at just the right time.  Leave the wave-catching here to the experienced locals to avoid any vacation disruptions.

View the coastline from the sea

Sail along the coastline on a catamaran with Kepoikai.  Try to get a seat on the trampoline area to admire the blue sea underneath you and get the best view on the boat.

Venture beyond Waikiki

There are so many beautiful spots and activities on Oahu to check out. The stunning beaches of the North Shore and Kailua. Watching big wave surfers at Pipeline, kayaking to Mokulua islands from Kailua,  and snorkeling Hanauma Bay are just a few…these places offer unforgettable experiences.
