Let’s talk about secondhand shopping. My personal design philosophy is that every room should have a few touches that are vintage, second hand or repurposed items. It gives character to the space and helps to create that lived in, curated over time look. Not to mention it can be an affordable way to furnish and decorate a space with unique items. Shopping second hand also helps to reduce waste and give new life to previously loved items. In this post, we will explore the benefits and give you tips for using secondhand items in your interior design and decorating projects. I’ll also share with you my favorite ways to incorporate previously owned items into your space.

Benefits of Using Secondhand Items
Eco-Friendly
We all know using secondhand items is good for the environment. By repurposing and reusing secondhand items, you are reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills. It also helps to reduce the demand for new products, which often have a significant environmental impact. I’m all for purchasing new items that you love and need for your home, but if there is an opportunity to get something previously used I encourage you to try it.
Affordable
One of the biggest benefits of using secondhand items in your interior design and decorating projects is the cost savings. You can find great deals on quality furniture, decor, and accessories that would cost significantly more if purchased new. This allows you to stretch your budget further and create a unique and personalized space without breaking the bank. Your local thrift store, Facebook Marketplace and antique stores are excellent places to shop before deciding to purchase new.

Unique and Personalized
Secondhand items have a history and character that cannot be replicated by new items. They add a unique and personalized touch to your space and can be used to create a one-of-a-kind look that reflects your individual style. You can even find global products that add character to your space. I found a beautiful pottery piece from Peru at an antique store for $15! Trip to another country not required.
Also remember that many “new” design styles are rooted in the past. I’ve found tons of “on trend” items shopping secondhand.

Tips for Using Secondhand Items
Have a Plan
Before you start shopping for secondhand items, it is important to have a plan in place. Decide on the overall style and color scheme you want to achieve and create a list of items you need to complete the look. This will help you stay focused while shopping and avoid buying items that don't fit with your vision.

I have something in mind to add to a project and don’t you know I will find something similar a thrift or antique store.
Consider our concept board your vision to manifest the sh*t out of your thrifting trips. You can, of course, shop new from the list of items chosen for your design or you can use the concept design as a guide to help you choose pre-owned products that fit your unique design scheme. I like a mix of both!!

Inspect Items Carefully
When shopping for secondhand items, it is important to inspect them carefully for any damage or wear and tear. Look for items that are structurally sound and can be easily cleaned or repaired if needed. Avoid items that are too damaged or worn to be salvaged.
I’m super careful about furniture with cushions and foam. Be sure to check for smells and be prepared that replacing fabric and foam can cost as much as purchasing new. If the item has a great shape, profile, and structure it can be well worth the cost of reupholstering.
If you are wary of furniture, try starting small with accessories such as pottery, vases, frames and artwork. Here are a few ways I’ve incorporated secondhand items:

Mix and Match
Mixing and matching different styles and eras of furniture and décor can create a unique and eclectic look in your space. Don't be afraid to mix vintage pieces with modern ones, or to use items in unexpected ways.
Get Creative
Secondhand items can be repurposed and upcycled in a variety of ways. An old ladder can be turned into a unique bookshelf, or a vintage suitcase can be used as a coffee table. Let your creativity run wild and see what unique ideas you can come up with. Check out the simple dresser that I purchased for $20 and spruced with a fresh white coat, a gold painted inset and new knobs. It’s a great heavy wood dresser that is perfect for storing arts and crafts items. I also love the super clean line profile.
