5 Tips for Designing a Coastal Home

Source - The Bower

Coastal minimal interior design is a style that lends a feel of ease and simplicity.  It is not overly decorated or adorned.  The beauty of it comes from the restrained color pallet and furnishings along with thoughtful accessory styling.  Combining the relaxed, calming vibe of coastal design with the simplicity and functionality of minimalism is nothing short of perfection. This style is perfect for those who want a clean, refreshing space that is both stylish and practical.

Here are some tips to help you create the perfect coastal minimal interior design:

Keep it Simple

The key to a successful coastal minimal interior design is to keep things simple. Focus on clean lines, neutral colors, and natural materials. This will help create a calm, soothing environment that is perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

When using accessories, a few well-placed nods to the coast like chunky coral on a stack of books, wood vase with a frond, or textured mirror frame will add interest to this clean-line design.  We also love using a string of beads, terracotta pots, and large coastal or abstract art.

Use Natural Materials

Natural materials are a key component of coastal minimal interior design. Wood, linen, and rattan are all great materials to use in this style. They add texture and warmth to the space, without overwhelming it with color or pattern.  If you do want to use pattern, consider a simple stripe in a muted color.

The key to using natural materials is to not go overboard on one particular material. If you are using rattan consider using it only once or twice within a room. Same goes for wood tones. Use a wood tone once or twice within the space and then consider adding a darker or lighter tone if incorporating other wood pieces. Restraint is key when using a specific material.

Choose Neutral Colors

Neutral colors are a great choice for coastal minimal interior design. They create a calm, peaceful environment that is perfect for unwinding after a long day. White, beige, and light gray are all great choices for this style.

You may have noticed the used of light, pinky blush in our Coquina project designs.  This shade is a perfect addition and many times reads as a neutral.  Tan leather is another favorite color addition to this type of design. Terra-cotta and rust also work nicely within the neutral color pallet.

Incorporate Texture

We recommend texture in any interior design style, but it is especially important in coastal minimal style. Adding texture through natural materials like rattan, linen, and wool can help create a warm, inviting space. Fluted wood furnishings, leather streamlined chairs and carved woods are other textural components that compliment the design.  I also like to use grass cloth wallpaper as another texture layer.  Lighting is another way to bring texture in. We especially love a grouping of textured pendants or a plaster sconce like we featured in the Coquina project.

Add Plants

Plants are a great addition to any interior style!  They add a touch of nature to the space, and can help create a calming environment. Plus, they are a great way to add a touch of color to an otherwise neutral space.

If you are like me and do not have a particularly green thumb consider dried palm fronds, good quality faux tropical stems and cactus.  One of my favorite things to add greenery is rescuing a fallen palm branch or other found trimmings like sea grass to adorn a large vase or pot.  It’s free and looks amazing!
